FLEE - FOLLOW - FIGHT

                        FLEE – FOLLOW – FIGHT

1 Timothy 6:6-12

INTRO. Our text speaks of “gain,” and in pursuit of that
gain it becomes easy to fall away and become entangled
in sin. Paul describes “great gain” as “godliness with
contentment.” How may we come into possession of this
“great gain?” There are three things that must be done.

I. FLEE
     A. Latin is fugio, from whence "fugitive."
          1. Scripture tells us to flee many things.
     B. The love of money - 3 figures in vv. 9-10:
          1. Drowning - urge to "get rich" engulfs one.
          2. Trapping - Satan will snare us (2 Tim. ).
          3. Taking root - tap root, going down, taking hold.
     C. s (2 Tim. ).
          1. "Youthful s" - more than fleshly passions.
               i. Impatience.
               ii. Self-assertion.
               iii. Argumentation.
               iv. Love of novelty.
          2. Too many love these (cf. 2 John -17).
          3. While doing this, we are in sin (Eph. 2:1-3).
     D. Fornication (1 Cor. , cf. Joseph, Gen. 39).
          1. Society seeks it - does not flee from it!
     E. Idolatry (1 Cor. ).
          1. Here is covetousness (Col. 3:5).
          2. Cite many things that are idols to people.
     F. Do not seek these things - flee them!
          1. Even Satan will flee if resisted (Jas. 4:7).

II. FOLLOW
     A. Just as we must flee some things, must follow others.
     B. Some things not to follow:
          1. A multitude to do evil (Exo. 23:2).
          2. Strong drink (Isa. ).
          3. One's own ways (Ezek. 13:3).
               i. May be "pernicious ways" (2 Pet. 2:2).
ii. Word is " " (NASB).
          4. Cunningly devised fables (2 Pet. ).
     C. We should follow:
          1. Righteousness (v. 11, text; Psa. 94:15).
          2. That which is just (Deut. ).
          3. Godliness; faith, etc. (text).
          4. Chaity (love) (1 Cor. 14:1).
          5. That which is good (1 Thess. 5:15; 1 Pet. 3:13;
              3 John 11.
          6. Peace with all men (Heb. ; Rom. ).
          7. Christ himself (1 Pet. 2:21; Matt. 4:19; 16:24).
          8.
Examples of good men (1 Cor. 11:1; Heb. 13:7).

III. FIGHT
     A. There are some things that must be fought.
          1. Engaged in war; spiritual combat (2 Cor. 10:3-5).
     B. There is an enemy to be faced.
          1. The world (Jas. 4:4).
          2. The flesh (Rom. , 23; Gal. ).
          3. The devil (1 Pet. 5:8-9; Jas. 4:7).
     C. How to fight.
          1. Be properly armed (Eph. -17).
          2. Bravely; courageously (cf. David, 1 Sam. ).
          3. Ceaselessly; Satan never rests (1 Pet. 5:8).
     D. The object of the fight.
          1. To gain eternal life (v. 12, text).
     E. Our example - Paul.
          1. He "fought a good fight" (2 Tim. 4:7-8).
          2. This was the "good fight of faith" (v. 12, text)

CONCLUSION: Here are the three "F's" of Christian
living: FLEE -FOLLOW - FIGHT. Every child of God
must do every one of them if the battle is to be won.
